Targeting all aspects of environmental sustainability, Cranswick's dedication to the reduction of its carbon footprint is key to our business strategy and we pride ourselves on being industry leaders in forward planning.
The management of our business activities on the environment continues to be an important measure of our company’s performance. As the nation struggles to generate sufficient energy to supply both its commercial and domestic customers, it is becoming more crucial to our business and is imperative that we manage all aspects of sustainability. Our retail customers, financial investors, consumers, suppliers and neighbours demand the highest level of commitment to environmental schemes.
Since 2008 we have been actively measuring our consumption and setting bold targets for the business. We are now using 20% less energy per tonne of product manufactured compared to 2008. We continue to strive to further reduce our energy through well invested sites, employee engagement, energy efficient buildings and state of the art equipment.
Currently four of our largest sites are responsible for 71% of the group’s energy use. With this in, mind we have targeted these sites and begun site specific energy reviews.
This site is currently being used as a test bed by the business by introducing a wide range of new technologies including; energy efficient lighting, pumps and control systems that will reduce the sites annual energy consumption and reduce its costs by more than 30%.
We have installed a Clayton heat recovery system which enables the exhaust gases from the singer to be captured and used to provide hot water, thereby reducing the reliance on the sites boilers.
This site is undertaking a complete renewal of their refrigeration system which will not only make the system more energy efficient but will also be fitted with heat exchangers to recover heat and provide the sites hot water requirements.
A recent extension at this facility has seen both energy and water efficiencies being implemented due to the installation of a new cooking system and lighting system.
Water is fast becoming a scarce commodity across the whole world. As a major food producer, water use is essential to our business as it is used in a variety of our processes, from blending product, producing ice and carrying out the hygiene of our factories.
Whilst water use continues to increase across the group in absolute terms, the water use per tonne of product has fallen by 2.5% during the past year and, as one of the original signatories to the Federation House Commitment (FHC 2020), we remain committed to reducing our water consumption by 20% by 2020. To date, we have reduced our overall consumption by 14.6% and are now 75% toward our commitment target.
Prior to 2012, all our sites operated autonomously when dealing with their waste streams. As a consequence, most was finding its way into landfill sites. As a business, Cranswick decided to look at the waste hierarchy and better manage our waste in a more responsible manner.
To that end we engaged in a partnership with Biffa/IRM and began a significant step change in how we managed our wastes. We set ourselves a target of 100% landfill avoidance by the end of 2015.
Despite difficult market conditions within the waste industry, we have continued to challenge our waste management partner to establish improved disposal routes and increase rebates for recyclates and further reduce the overall "cost per tonne". It is no surprise that by the end of 2013 we had successfully avoided sending waste to landfill by 87.5% across the business and we were awarded the "Environmental Initiative of the Year" by a panel of our peers at the annual Meat and Poultry Processing Awards. We are confident that, with the expert knowledge and continued support from Biffa/IRM, we will attain our target of zero to landfill by the end of 2014.
Significant steps have been taken to ensure our packaging is obtained from sustainable sources. We work closely with our suppliers and customers to keep abreast of the latest innovations and we have committed to reducing the weight of our packaging, including pack sizes, corrugate cardboard and base films, wherever possible. In the past year we have managed to remove c.75 tonnes from packaging to our customers.
As we continue to strive for further reductions, we have planned projects to remove a further 64.5 tonnes of weight from packaging during 2014.

The Cranswick Group has always been proactive in calculating its carbon footprint, which we have done since 2007 and is an aggregated total of individual site figures and includes all site energy transport, F-gas usage and waste. We calculate this using the DEFRA guidelines and standard conversion factors for Company reporting.
Three recent acquisitions (Riverside, Kingston Foods and Yorkshire Baker) have been included in the group data for 2013.
Despite an increase in production of 7% from the enlarged group, our absolute carbon footprint has fallen by 0.4%
The relative carbon footprint, which is a measure of carbon emitted per tonne of product, has continued its impressive downward trend and is 6.7% down like for like and 3.5 % down for the extended group.
Against the group’s target of reducing our carbon footprint by 30% by 2020 against its 2010 baseline, we have already achieved an impressive 26% reduction. However, having achieved a considerable reduction on our previous targets between 2007-2010, we have seen an overall saving in excess of 45%
Cranswick Plc is very mindful how our business activities might impact the environment and, to mitigate this, the business has committed to all sites across the group operating a formalised and robust externally verified Environmental Management System (EMS) capable of being accredited to ISO 14001. To date, the Preston, Barnsley, Delico, Gourmet Sausage, Continental Fine Foods, The Sandwich Factory, Gourmet Bacon, Sutton Fields and Norfolk sites have been successful in obtaining accreditation. Yorkshire Baker and Riverside site are expected to follow suit within the current year. Any future acquisitions will be expected to obtain this standard as part of their integration to the Cranswick Group.
